I think you’ll have to agree that the world is a much different place and you and I grew up in. Long gone are the days that you can just let your kids play up the street with friends until the sun goes down.
I grew up in Miami in a time where it may have been a bit crazy but it was still ok to walk by yourself blocks and blocks away from your home. It was ok to ride bikes with your friends and just play outside until it was just getting dark. One of the friends on my block had a mother with a set of lungs and she would just stand outside by the fence at her house and yell Maaarrriiiiiaaaaa!
Maria was a childhood friend and she lived at least a block or two away from my home. We could all hear her mother yelling from far away that Maria needed to come home because it was getting late and the sun was setting.
I kind of wish my kids had that experience but the reality is it’s a scary world. My daughter goes to friends’ houses but it’s usually because we drop her off and know where she is at 24/7.
Summer is pretty much over where we are in the Florida and we as parents have to think about safety tips. Whether your child is a bus rider or walks home, I know I always have safety at the top of my mind.
I have the Blink security cameras in my home and I personally think they are great. These cameras can be linked up to your cell phone so you get alerts when the cameras are activated. I always know when my daughter walks through the door or when a package is left on my doorstep.
It pains my heart to even discuss this subject but our reality as parents is that we always think ahead of our child’s safety. I recently saw an advert regarding backpacks that are somewhat tactical in nature. It’s a sad day we have to think about stuff like this but it’s always best to opt for safety first for our kids. I recently saw that stores are selling backpacks with Kevlar in them, in the worst case scenario that a school shooting happens. This would be my worst nightmare but it’s well worth thinking ahead and planning for our kids’ safety.
Amazon has several type Kevlar backpacks for sale. A bit pricier than your everyday backpack but can we really put a price on safety?
Another thing to think about is a tracker. There are several type trackers on the market but Tile is one brand that is slim and can be placed in your child’s backpack or on their key chain. The trackers were meant to find things such as keys or a wallet, but think of the possibilities. I think it’s not a bad idea to pop one in your child’s backpack and let them know it’s for their own safety. You’ll know where they are at all times.

Mabel’s labels really keeps our kids safety in mind with the products they create. One of my favorite is Food Allergy labels. While my child personally doesn’t have food allergies, I have close friends that do and it’s no joke. Just one peanut, or the sweat of another child who has eaten nuts can be all that it takes to put a child with allergies life in danger.
My heartfelt prays be with all our children in the new year. May they have loads of fun, lots of fun and meet many new friends!
